15. Connectors and particles: structure and tone

German · 15 of 193 min readNov 2026

Two groups of small words separate B1 from C1: connectors that build an argument, and modal particles that carry attitude. Connectors make your writing structured; particles make your speech sound human.

Connectors by function

Each connector also decides word order (section 10), so learn its type with it: 0 = no effect, Adv = fills the Vorfeld (verb follows), Sub = verb to the end, Prep = a preposition with a noun.

Function Connectors
Cause weil, da (Sub); denn (0); deshalb, daher, deswegen (Adv); wegen, aufgrund + Gen (Prep)
Concession obwohl (Sub); trotzdem, dennoch (Adv); trotz + Gen (Prep); zwar … aber
Contrast während (Sub); dagegen, hingegen, jedoch (Adv); aber, sondern (0); im Gegensatz zu + Dat
Condition wenn, falls, sofern (Sub); sonst, andernfalls (Adv); bei + Dat (Prep)
Purpose damit (Sub); um … zu + infinitive; zwecks + Gen (Prep)
Consequence sodass, so … dass (Sub); folglich, infolgedessen, also (Adv)
Time als, wenn, nachdem, bevor, während, seitdem, sobald, solange, bis (Sub); danach, vorher, inzwischen (Adv)
Means indem, dadurch dass (Sub); dadurch (Adv); durch + Akk (Prep)
Addition außerdem, zudem, darüber hinaus, ferner (Adv); nicht nur … sondern auch; sowohl … als auch
Alternatives entweder … oder; weder … noch
Proportion je … desto (Je mehr ich lese, desto besser verstehe ich.)

Verbal style and nominal style

The same idea can be expressed with a clause or with a noun phrase. Formal German prefers the noun phrase, and converting between the two is a standard C1 exam task.

Verbal (spoken) Nominal (written)
Weil die Preise steigen, … Aufgrund steigender Preise …
Obwohl es regnete, … Trotz des Regens …
Nachdem er das Studium abgeschlossen hatte, … Nach Abschluss des Studiums …
Wenn man die Regeln nicht beachtet, … Bei Nichtbeachtung der Regeln …
Damit die Qualität verbessert wird, … Zur Verbesserung der Qualität …

The conversion follows a fixed recipe: the verb becomes a noun (often -ung), the subject or object becomes a Genitiv or a von phrase, and the conjunction becomes a preposition.

Modal particles are short, unstressed words in the middle field that tell the listener how to take a sentence. They have no direct translation; they mark the speaker’s attitude toward shared knowledge.

Particle Attitude Example
ja “as we both know” Das ist ja klar.
doch reminder or mild contradiction; in requests, urging Das weißt du doch. Komm doch mit!
mal softens a request Kannst du mal kurz kommen?
eben, halt “that’s just how it is” (halt is more southern and colloquial) Das ist halt so.
denn interest or surprise in questions Was machst du denn hier?
wohl supposition Er ist wohl krank.
schon reassurance, or concession Das wird schon klappen.
eigentlich “actually, by the way” Was machst du eigentlich beruflich?
bloß, nur warning, or a strong wish Mach das bloß nicht!
ruhig permission, “go ahead” Du kannst ruhig fragen.

You already use this category: Azerbaijani axı works much like doch (Mən sənə dedim axı ≈ Ich hab’s dir doch gesagt), and Turkish işte like halt / eben. Learn particles by imitating whole sentences you hear, not by translating them; using one in the wrong place sounds stranger than leaving it out.
